Hearing Test

I had to take Walter to get his hearing tested yesterday. No big deal, but he had never completed his newborn hearing screen in the hospital. Apparently he was crying and not being cooperative at that time. So it took me this long to get approval from our insurance carrier to take him for a hearing test, but that's another story.

It turns out that he responded well to the louder noises, but his response was not as good as we hoped for the quieter noises. The audiologist found lots of fluid in his ear, and she thinks this is why. Now, this may not be a big deal. The fluid is not infected and it's not bothering him. It may be just some congestion that still remains from a cold he had a few weeks ago. Our pediatrician will have to watch out for this, and if it doesn't go away or if it becomes a chronic problem, he may have to get tubes in his ears. I'll have to take him back to get his hearing tested again once the fluid is out of his ears.

It's good that we know to look out for this now, because his general pediatrician probably wouldn't have noticed the fluid, as it is not infected. So now we know to look for it, so if it does become a problem, we will catch it really early. Or it may never be a problem. We ask for your prayers that it turns out to be nothing.

You'll definitely be in our prayers. I'm off to an audiologist in Brunswick next week for Spencer. He passed his newborn hearing test in his right ear but failed the left ear 3x. Our pediatrician said she could see a build up of fluid and vernix in his left ear so we're trying to keep up our hopes on the situation. Anyway, I sure hope the fluid is resolved soon in Walter's ear. Take care.
