Lately I've been looking for something fun to get us out of the house and to meet some other kids. I took Walt to a class at the toddler gym the other day and we both loved it. I am going to sign him up for classes when the next session starts in a few weeks. The class was perfect for us. I really wanted to find some other kids for Walt to play with since we really don't have friends his age since we moved here. I'm also hoping that being around other kids will help him learn to talk. The class was great because there was enough structure to provide a good learning environment, but it was relaxed enough that I didn't have to worry about him wandering around or not staying on task. They have a small group of kids right around his age (10-19 months), so the teaching and the skills were right at his level. They were very positive, fun, and engaging. He had a great time running around and climbing. He learned to forward roll and to swing on the bars. It was also a lot of fun for me because I got to see him running around having a ball and to see him learning and to talk to other moms. I think the class will help him learn to interact with other kids, to listen and follow directions, and of course, to learn and practice physical skills.
It seems we have gotten to the age where he is no longer content to hang out at home and he really needs something more to entertain him. He's ready to learn and experience new things. The gym was one great way to do that. I'm learning to get creative with other activities for him, too!
