Since I was not feeling good last week, Walter and I hadn't made it out of the house much in a while, so I decided Walter needed something fun to do. Since it's so hot outside, I thought storytime at the local library seemed like a great idea. So we headed over there this morning. Well, I think Walter had a good time, but I'm not sure we'll be going back. The storyteller was great. She read three kids books, with great enthusiasm and did several sing-a-long songs with motions and everything. While all the other toddlers sat and listened eagerly to the story and moved along with the songs, Walter was running wild! He ran up to the front and tried to take the book from the poor girl. Then he found the computer and started banging away on the keyboard. Then he started wandering between all the people and trying to get into all the moms' purses, keys, papers, etc. He pretty much got into everything else he could find in the room. Although everyone was very nice about it all, I'm not sure they really enjoyed us being there. I think he distracted every other kid and mom away from the story. Sigh. I spent the entire time chasing him and trying to keep him out of trouble.
I just don't know what to do with him. He won't sit still ever. He can't seem to stay out of trouble. I can't take him anywhere because he gets into everything he can find. He refuses to sit in a stroller or cart. But we can't stay at home, because not only are we bored, but he's destroying the house!
Does anyone out there have any good ideas for activities to do with an energetic one-year-old?

Jack was this way for me. You'll notice that I rarely showed up to any wardroom functions that included children ;) Anyway, I finally found to start the morning at the park. He'd run his energy out like wild there and mostly had the park to himself so he wasn't bothering anyone. It took some of the energy out of him and he was able to sit at story time later in the morning or run errands with me much better behaved. He calmed down around 2 to 2 1/2. Best of luck to you!!!
Do you have any of those indoor bounce house places? The one by us has toddler time for a couple of hours every morning, and Isabel's more energetic friends really enjoy it. Good luck!
I second both the playground and bounce house ideas. There's also a sprayground at Wannamaker Park off of 78, that's great for when it's hot but you still want him to be able to run around. Or you can even just turn on the sprinklers in your own yard and let him run around. I actually have a friend that lives near you that has a son that will be turning one soon, I'll shoot her an email asking how she keeps him busy and get back to you. :)
